Most of us wonder how are we going to redesign our bathroom or how are we going to create a unique bathroom design.

For the past years, the design for the bathroom had been the talk of the interior designers. This said talk changed the world of design from a room decorated house to the contest in the most favored bathroom.

The most popular styles in the bathroom design are the Edwardian style and the Victorian style. In cottage or villa’s bathroom, these are widely used and appealed as the most sensible design.

Through the modernized plumbing, the evolution of the bathroom became possible. Technology also adds up by its products such as steaming systems and hydro therapeutically enhanced water systems.

With these kinds of technology applied in the bathrooms, no one could there imagine the future of the bathrooms.

Let me discuss the most known designs for the bathrooms that may serve as your model in redesigning your own.

The first is the traditional bathroom. This kind of bathroom possesses this main feature: a more lively feeling is created by the clutter around. This said feature augments the traditional design.

In using the traditional style, putting many pictures should not be avoided. Gold frames used in black and white pictures are the best to use. Scented candles can also add up to the beauty of this kind of bathroom. Oils and flowers with therapeutically enhanced remedies can also be used to give life to the bathroom.

Finishing touch may include mirror, radiator, and weighing scales. All these can be used if they are old yet stylish enough.

Another style to consider is the country approach. This is said to be the easiest design to mimic as a model. The same as the traditional, this kind also is applicable to any kind of house.

Bath canopy, floral wallpaper, basin frill, and high beam are the features of the country style. Most of the country style bathroom has a melancholy ambience.

When it comes to curtains, plaid is the most recommended. Shutters if added can also add more privacy. Cabinets which are made of wood are most welcome. Rustic tiles should also be used. Wood tiles can also be utilized. Baskets can be best employed as the final touch.

Another style is the shabby chic, this term is coined to mean “unclear blend of technique and neglect. Unlike the traditional, it is the trickiest style to do.

In fact, it takes an interior designer a bowl of courage to apply this design.

Most of these designers apply this style in Spanish villas and French chateaus.

Mismatch of the materials and the styles to be used is the concept for this style. Do whatever you want system is applicable for this. The most unexpected design is the most beautiful.

In addition to this, this kind of style calls for the appearance of the plumbing and the pipe work.

These are the most unique bathroom design that can be applied to your bathroom.

Regardless of the type of bathroom layout design you choose, it is always important to stick with the basic necessities. The amount of space you want depends on how you arrange everything as well as the picking the right styles that bring out the best aspects while keeping out clutter. Find out more tips on proper location as well as selection of items that add life to the room.

Stick with the Basics

The toilet and sink are indispensable materials that are always included in any type of bathroom layout. Depending on the available space you have, find the right spots that give you enough working area. A bigger square area will give you more freedom to place vanities and large toilets while smaller ones may require you to invest in wall-mounted or pedestal sinks.

Storage space is also important which may come in the form of hanging wall cabinets, vanities, counters and closets. Smaller bathrooms can strategically place the sink nearest to the door with the toilet also located along the same wall. A single aisle that leads you straight to the bath area will suffice as your working area. Make sure the aisle is clear and free from protruding items and clutter.

As for baths, you may be better off with a small bath area at the end of the room if you have smaller space to work with. Simple create a division using a shower curtain or a slight difference in floor elevation with the bath area slightly lower than where the sink and toilet are located. An elevation of 2 to 4 inches is ideal. Also consider the door, windows and other means of ventilation so that all these can properly adhere to the overall layout. Pocket doors instead of hinged ones may be better for limited areas. If you have a big bathroom, don’t hesitate to put a bathtub and closets for added space and convenience.

The Layout and Design

When choosing a bathroom layout, it will help a lot if you pick a certain theme so that all arrangements and items you put in have a consistent design. There are several strategies in creating the illusion of more space such as proper lighting and paint color. Huge mirrors, a roof or wall skylight or big windows will help bring in natural light which in effect will make the bathroom seem bigger. Moisture will also be controlled which increases longevity.

Experts suggest sticking to pastel and other light hues since it improves the layout by adding more space. Try to stick with two tones such as white and yellow, mint green and white or beige and light blue. Larger tiles with solid colors are good as well. You may want to add molding along the ceiling but this type of design can limit space and should be used carefully.

It is equally important to consider large decorations when planning the layout since these can consume space. Strategically arrange mirrors to bring out more light and maximize the appearance of the room. When choosing decorations to match your overall design, think of a certain theme and make sure you do not mix modern with traditional or other different types. When you’re looking to free up more space, you can find alternative storage places off the floor.

The bathroom should be a place of comfort. We usually head straight for it when we wake up in the morning, or take a leisurely bath to freshen up and relieve the tension of work. There are some who use their bathroom as a place to read their favorite books or newspapers, considering the peace and quiet that you get from the place.

Going for vintage classic designs incorporated into your bathroom can give it a classic, yet luxurious appeal that will fit well with rest of your household. The demand of change converted many vintage designs to a more modern and futuristic style – but this is not always the case.

It is true that vintage designs might seem out of place at this point in time, but we can never deny the elegant beauty what a vintage design can do to the household’s aura, the timeless appeal that cannot be seen in modern designs and styles.

Vintage Bathroom A Work Of Art

Designing your bathroom with vintage furniture and fixtures do add to the comfort of the place, as well as the picturesque and stylish look. Sink, faucet, bathtub, toilets, and accessories should be of the same theme so that your bathroom won’t appear as a hodgepodge of clashing styles and designs.

If size is not a problem, then you can go for vintage cabinets, closets, benches, and chairs to set the right mood. You can accentuate its beauty by incorporating vintage tiles into its design. You may use pastel colors or those with shades of brown, mahogany, and chocolate. These tiles can be used on your sink, counter-tops (if you have one in your bathroom), shower, walls, and so on.

Proper Lighting

To further improve the vintage look of your bathroom, providing the proper lighting can greatly enhance the overall quality of your place of comfort. Rather than using a single intensity light, you can utilize lighting controls where you can control it from dim to bright. This will allow you to set the mood for different activities, even a romantic one if you want.

Chose The Style You Want

Now that you have an idea on the important details for a vintage-styled bathroom, you now need to decide on what era would be perfect. There are 4 known styles to choose from, and these are:

1. Victorian. The Victorian-styled bathrooms are an abundance of stained glass, flowers, embroidery, and marble. This style is always flamboyant and luxurious, fitting the royalty of the Victorian age. Common colors are blue and red.

2. Art Deco. This theme can only be called glamorous; it emphasizes geometric designs and rhythmic patters including spheres and lines; and colors of the hue turquoise, burgundy, and corals.

3. The 50’s. For this style alone, color is the most important factor that will determine the 50’s design. Bright ones from sea-green to bubble-gum pink are the best colors for it. You can even use plastic tubs and accessories that are well known during this era. To sum it all up, as long as it’s bright and flashy, then it’s the 50’s.

4. The 60’s. This psychedelic age is well known for its cork flooring, metallic wallpapers, and wooden fixtures. Incorporating earth colors can turn your dreary bathroom into the roaring 60’s, as well as the organic materials popular during the era.

Even with the rise of contemporary and other modern interior designs, a lot of people still enjoy going for the vintage look. There is that certain aura of calmness and prestige that comes with vintage bathrooms. You may be surprised to know that you can easily and cheaply get the items you need in the most common places. Here are some tried and proven tips.

The Look

Vintage bathrooms are usually influenced by the 1920s and 1930s era. Colors and shades are usually light with hints of black or navy blue. Tiles are porcelain or marble with smooth finishes of white and other pale colors like sky blue and light green. Halfway up the walls, apply square tiles. Vintage bathroom floors have a mosaic design wherein a bold color interior would be bordered. You can find these kinds of tiles at your local shop or get them at cheaper prices in garage sales.

Built-ins are very popular vintage pieces since the period wanted everything fresh and clean-looking. Most decorations you have to place in your bathroom may need to be both aesthetic and practical. Hidden medicine cabinets are ideal pieces as well as towel bars built into the sink. Towel bars are heated via hot water or electricity so you can easily find the perfect one in your local hardware shop. Your towel bar may be built-in the sink or independent.

When choosing bathroom lights, you should pick frosted glass and metals since these effectively create a vintage atmosphere. Antique sconces and ceiling lights are great as well which you can get at antique stores or flea markets. Hanging lamps are good also. Skylights were popular back then so experiment if it compliments your overall theme. As for lighting, a standalone bathroom lamp is good plus yellow or fluorescent ceiling light. Light bulbs were very popular during the era so feel free to use these.

The Vintage Highlights

A vintage bathtub is one of the main items that your bathroom needs. There are clawfoot and pedestal tubs made of cast iron or acrylic. These are quality pieces that you can order from special vintage manufacturers. A vintage sink is also important so try to have some space available for a vessel or pedestal sink. A vintage toilet preferably white is an excellent addition to the tub and sink. Stainless steel fixtures are common and look well with white shades. You may choose to keep your current toilet or invest in novelty toilet seats.

Ceramic or porcelain will usually do the trick when it comes to flooring. Vinyl and hardwood are great options too. As for shower curtains, stick with floral or plaid designs. Plain whites can effectively work in your design too. Faucets, plumbing, tubes and knobs are ideally stainless steel or bronze. You may polish these or leave them in their rustic classic state.

Decors should be added slowly so as not to overdo the theme. Too much decors will take the attention away from the prime pieces such as the tub, sink and toilet. Antique decorations are best or you may pick porcelain and metal ones as well. A simple square mirror over the sink will do in your vintage bathroom since you’re not too concerned about space or sophistication. Be careful about mouldings. Your main objective is to provide a classic, simple and clean appearance.

Planning to transform your bathroom into a beach paradise? You only need to know a few simple rules as well as remember your fondest tropical objects to create the look you’ve always wanted. You may choose to make drastic changes or gradually add a few things at a time until you attain the perfect ambiance. Here’s how to design a beach bathroom.

Color and Texture

You can choose between a restful tropical environment and a fun and lively one. If you’re aiming for some peace and relaxation, aim for colors like ivory, pale gold, tan and green. Earth colors help provide a more calm background. You can then add in accents like white window and shower curtains. Shower curtains should have tribal or tropical patterns as well. If you have translucent glass doors that lead to the shower area, you may want to add more designs on it like seashells and fishes. Tropical plants and some flowers will provide colorful tones. If you have enough room, a palm or banana leaf is great as corner decors.

As for texture, wicker, bamboo, grass cloth and rattan will create a stimulating effect. You can place bamboo mats on the floor, cut bamboo trunks to be used as toothbrush and razor holders or line the window screen with split bamboo. Seashells, small wooden totems and hibiscus are great decoration items. You may want to add starfish and gecko designs on shower curtains, cabinets and the vanity. You may also take out the vanity and cabinet doors and have tribal patterns carved. Tiles can be grainy or unpolished to provide a sandy effect.

Lighting

For a beach effect, the bathroom should have lots of light preferably coming from natural sources. You can have bigger windows compared to traditional bathrooms. Simply cover windows with white drapes or hanging beads. A skylight is a unique idea since it brings in a lot of sunlight during the day.

You can place electrical tiki torches in all corners of the room. Seashell sconces are ideal at night. Yellow light looks great in providing a tropical aura at night. Make sure you have enough light over bathroom mirrors. Hanging lights are not always the norm so you may instead have ceiling lights installed. A wooden ceiling fan with lamps is also a great choice for both appearance and ventilation.

Other Accessories

There are hand-painted ceramic sinks available too which are perfect for your tropical design. Some toilet bowls have customized flush handles with fish or shell shapes. Bamboo mirrors are ideal over the sinks. Find a large shell and use it as a soap dish. Other items in the room if possible should present a beach feel as well like the trash can, towel hanger and toilet seat cover. Wicker baskets are excellent storage bins. You may place white stones and tropical plants like birds of paradise in it.

When choosing decors, try to be consistent with the pattern and colors so as not to disrupt the overall theme. Some decors may tend to dominate the entire area making your bathroom look small like surfboards and huge totem figures. Make sure that each item compliments the entire beach bathroom well. Bathroom size determines how much décor you can put in. Bathroom decors should work as accents to the main colors that you picked.

When it comes to bathrooms, you need to check if the color perfectly matches the size and design. Some people choose color based on its meaning or practicality. Some people may realize that their favorite hues can actually make the room smaller or cluttered. There are a few simple guidelines you need to follow to effectively get the look and feel that you want.

The Different Shades

White is the most common bathroom color. It gives a sense of cleanliness and purity. White is ideal for small bathrooms since it makes the room seem larger and quickly points out any eyesores. Together with white are yellow, beige and pink. These are not feminine colors as what most people may think. They provide a very relaxing aura especially in the morning. With a little light, individuals won’t have any problems shaving or fixing their faces.

Blue is another popular color providing a sense of calmness and ease. Blue colored bathrooms are great for decors and compliments stainless steel fixtures in the area as well. People may choose white or dark blue tiles to install which are a perfect match should blue be selected as wall paint. Yellow and white light works well with blue too making it a very flexible hue.

Green usually is used in bathrooms in lighter shades evoking peace and quietness. Green is mentally relaxing and is most attractive during the day. At night green may tend to make the room seem smaller since the shade gets dark without much light. White and yellow are great complimentary colors so you may want to pick porcelain fixtures having those.

Dark colors like black, red and maroon are almost never used in bathrooms unless the area is really big. These shades are very bold and can make a room seem small. These colors also tend to absorb heat so rooms may be very hot during midday or in the summer. There are a number of bathrooms that did well with the inclusion of blacks and reds considering that they used neutralizing materials, patterns and decors to balance the environment.

The Trends

Nowadays, people prefer tinted neutrals with hints of blue, rose or green. The neutrals are now toned instead of the traditional white or beige. Recently, earth colors have also grown in prominence in most bathrooms. Brown, yellow and burnt sienna were shown to be some of the top choices in bathroom renovations. People are becoming more adventurous by including metallics, pearlescences and translucences too.

If you’re aspiring for a certain theme for your bathroom, you need to study the main colors that constitute it. For example, a country style bathroom will need more brown and white, tropical bathrooms need blue, yellow and green and conventional ones need a lot of white and probably traces of black. Depending on your style and preference, it is important that the color matches the overall theme. Cabinets and vanity must only use dark shades if there is enough room light.

Accessories and decors accentuate the main colors so keep your palette consistent by sticking to the main hues. Stainless steel and white are great neutralizers so you may want to experiment with these. Plants and glass are also great neutralizers. Stick to three colors at most when designing your bathroom to keep it mentally refreshing and relaxing.

Designing a small bathroom can prove to be quite challenging since you’re working with less space with the same materials. There are some aspects you need to determine first to save money and effort. If you’re able to pull it all off, you’ll be able to get the convenience and beauty you’ve always wanted without compromise. Here are some tips how.

Boosting Space

Your basic goal in designing a small bathroom is for it to serve all the necessary functions without looking too cramped and little. First, you need to make the space seem larger by using components that perfectly match the size of the room. Choosing the standard toilet bowl size is adequate. The sink should also be standard. You may choose not to include a bathtub if it tends to dominate more than one-third of the total space. Instead, assign a shower area at the end of the bathroom.

For paint, choose light colors to make your bathroom seem larger. White, beige, yellow and sky blue are excellent choices. If you’re planning to install tiles on the wall, it’s better to use bigger ones instead of several small pieces. You can install one or two huge mirrors on one or two sides of the room to create an enlargement illusion. A pocket door is better compared to a hinged one when trying to add more space. Visually, translucent shower doors make the room much bigger too. Shower curtains are optional but make sure you stick to the color theme. Using a single finish on everything is recommended for consistency.

Install a bath cabinet and vanity where you can store toiletries and cleaning supplies. A smaller cabinet and vanity is ideal to save more space. Hanging sinks are also better since these provide more space underneath. Avoid putting drapes on bathroom windows. You may even choose translucent or opaque glass instead without using any curtains at all.

More Design Tips

A single bright light on the ceiling is enough to illuminate the entire area including the shower corner. White light may be better compared to yellow since it creates an enlarging effect. Install an exhaust fan to avoid moisture that can cause molds and stains. A skylight is also permitted. If you’re drawing light from the window during daytime, it is advised that the window square area is at least 10% of the total area of the room.

Use one or two colors only in the bathroom. Using too many will make the room look smaller or too cluttered. A small green plant under the sink or above the flush is enough. Instead of using independent decors, you can choose functional ones with pretty designs like a shell soap dish or a Hawaiian mug that can serve as a razor and toothbrush holder.

As much as possible, your small bathroom door should open outward to save more space. Some small bathrooms already lack space that the door cannot full open since it will hit the nearby sink. Stay away from pedestal sinks. Practicality is preferred over luxury at this point.

You need to weigh your options when designing a small bathroom. You may install a favorite item like a bathtub considering that you know how to properly organize other essentials. Just be sure that every person coming in will be safe and comfortable.

A Chinese Emperor may have a bathroom the size of the White House, while other Asians of ancient past may have a waterfall just for the sake of decoration. Of course it may apply to some countries with a hierarchy today, but any regular Asian, especially their bathroom designers would find the best of the East and West to give off a flourish of designs that can capture both worlds, especially on Asian bathroom design.

Asian design in bathrooms is a hugely popular medium for most interior designers, and nothing left to the imagination as they add various items that is not too much on the bathroom owner’s wallet. Lighting, mirrors, tubs, showers, sinks, they try to be unique while avoiding the trap of overbearing. Considering a continent that is rich with water, they practically make bathing an involuntary trait to them, thus the need to provide an elegant, yet inexpensive approach.

For most homes, Asian bathroom design consists of lights, mainly overhead lamps and sconce that add a unique flare. Although fluorescent lamps are part of the lighting fixtures, they often use soft-glow types that give off a cooler light rather than incandescent bulbs.

The main layout for the bathroom was inspired from most American and European designs, added to a more Asian flair that would call their own. Screens and more vibrant colors when it comes to the floor tiles and walls gives off an optical illusion of having more room. Although some Asian bathroom designs would resemble a 4-star hotel in terms of modern elegance, the very essence of the design is simply derived from nature. Some flora is introduced, while waterproof wallpaper with bamboo prints give color to the walls. This can also include wood tiles and mahogany from other Asian countries for the countertop and a small armoire.

The main shower area and tub are designed depending on the country of origin, which can be circular like the Japanese or wide like the Chinese. Of course the rich would introduce a small above-ground pool for the main purpose of soaking in hot water, as well as lavish it off with some orchids to create a more natural look. With the mixture of both modern and classic, most modern jet-streamed tubs are placed in a central location, according to the feng-shui belief that the center is the very heart that revolves around everything.

Simple fixtures, mainly of faucets, showerheads and booths may sometimes be imported, while designs from local bathroom designers are inspired by using the available floor space of a typical Asian home. This is well suited for small bathrooms that upon entering would have everything within arm’s reach without too much clutter. For the wall to place a mirror to, they can be large, considering the vanity of most Asians and how they can be conscious about their looks.

Decoration is revolved mainly of plants, with some wood for frames and screens and a large portion is concentrated simply for the floor. Tiles sold in Asia have several patterns, which custom made ones can be ordered like that of a jigsaw puzzle, to create a mosaic effect.

Although a number of American homes may have a touch of European and American styles, the Asian bathroom décor is becoming a big hit, considering the need to have a bathroom with all the necessary items and fixtures without walking too much. The Asian bathroom design is for those with small homes, yet emphasizes mainly on the bathroom as the centerpiece.

The Italians, or the Romans during the days of the Empire have always been health-conscious people who enjoy a visit in the bath house. Of course, one of the largest bathhouses during that time was about 700 square meters, has an underground passage for slaves to serve the Patricians, and more than enough hot and cold water to satisfy their needs, among others. This was the start of earlier Italian bathroom design.

Basing the concept of history with today’s tasteful blend of old and new is something to look forward to. More than just a room to wash up and apply some makeup or after shave, bathrooms stemmed from Italian ideas never grow old.

Towel racks, door knobs and even a soap tray is meant to be eye pleasing to them, as Italian bathroom design revolves on using brass and polished metals to give an appearance of wealth, unless the said articles are actually molded gold. But cheaper alternatives would inspire any amateur home décor to spruce up the bathroom with designs that gives off an aura of ancient scenic beauty and Roman simplicity. Bathtubs may come in just about all shapes and sizes, but with some water jet-propelled ones like Jacuzzis are also introduced. Most of the bathtubs can be either ceramic or simply brass-types. And shower booths are also noted, can be made of clear glass or just an enclosed space with a blurred glass pane for a bit of privacy while showering.

Ceramics have been one of the basic elements when it comes to Italian bathroom design, setting tile after tile of light colors that gives the bathroom an appearance of warmth, despite of setting the cold water faucet by accident. Though a toilet is a toilet, women tend to be a bit more lavish as modern bidets makes toilet usage more pleasurable and hygienic for them. Floor mats can be used, but bleached mahogany is a better material to use as footboards that doesn’t let the bather feel cold once they step into the bathroom. The idea of heated floors is basically American, and this would cause too much moisture to retain, thus tarnishing the brass bit by bit.

Mirrors are an integral part of the Italian décor as it can be as elaborate with frames that accentuate the quality of the bathroom. Although it need not be a large mirror, simple decals can bring a more gorgeous look for nay morning monster who wishes to take a look at himself or herself. Medicine cabinets is unheard off, but small drawers and a sizeable surface area to place various cosmetics and hygiene products are duly noted, usually can be made of bleached mahogany, tiles or even just a good looking table.

In some cases, hanging small pictures of landscapes and flora will bring an added scenic look when it comes to Italian bathroom design. For most it may be just simple replicas from Monet and the like since most Italians appreciate the arts. Probably a small picture of wine and grapes would be good for that added touch.

There are various designs, tiles, and even fixtures for anyone who wish to turn a bathroom into a living piece of history, and this is more than just reading the paper while doing their business. Cleanliness, a sense of style and the uniqueness of ancient history, Italian bathroom design is a piece of artwork that can be well appreciated by anyone.

The bath is the main centerpiece for any Japanese home, so much like the fireplace for any American. It provides warmth and a good sense of family bonding aside from the cleanliness it brings. For most people living in Tokyo, especially since floor space is a big commodity, there are those who are privileged enough to have at least a bath in their home while most people go to bathhouses. Japanese bathroom design is an influence of today’s trends.

The Japanese bathroom design is comprised of both modern and simple designs, whether the old houses in Kyoto have large, spacious baths while with slatted floorboards to drain the water and a tub mainly of seasoned wood. Other Japanese bathrooms can be as compact, emphasizing the need to conserve space as everything can be done in a tiny 2 meter-square bathroom space. The main idea of Japanese bathroom design is either uniform or diversified, where it can be just stainless steel, tile or wood.

Most Japanese would use a variety of designs, types of tubs, toilets and showers to spark their creativity, therefore creating a stir in most bathroom designers to bring the latest in conceptual designs. It’s more of a mix-and-match style, while others would prefer a more traditional bath like the ones in Kyoto (a popular Hot Springs destination). To Japanese urban dwellers, shelves are a must-have, trying to make space in cramped apartments with a shower and a small tub where they would actually have to sit. These tubs are influenced by the older oak-made types with a boiler built underneath to feed in firewood. Mainly electrical, some companies would add a little flavor in these small tubs by adding a jet-stream feature as part of modern Japanese bathroom design. Of course, there are the regular-sized tubs both local and imported, and comes with a heavy price.

Towel racks and hooks are almost unheard of for many, but often an integral part when it comes to easy access to the nearest towel after dipping in near scalding water. Shelves are more popular as means for storage, even for some clothes like pajamas or robes aside from towels when it comes contemporary to Japanese bathroom design.

Showers and showerheads are not always introduced, since they use pails to carry water and washing themselves. Though a variety of compact showerheads with heaters have become a major part of the everyday Japanese and to conserve electricity instead of filling up a tub full of water. And the use of faucets is common as well to fill a pail of water.

When using toilets, the traditional type is actually sitting down on the floor while doing their, well, business and most are made with ceramic nowadays. Regular toilets, ranging from various functions like the one introduced in a local company that has everything a woman needs as well as an auto flush feature.

A lack of ambient design is very common with most Japanese bathroom design, as they prefer to have a sense of harmony, the way they need to relax without reminding them of their jobs. Although most designers also introduced some modern hardware like an LCD screen to watch while dipping in hot water or simple pictures, they would use any space to their advantage without being too overbearing. Futuristic is often the main theme for most designers, and it challenges them to create something small, if not space saving articles from sinks, toilets, showers and tubs, if not one item that almost does it all.
